Birmingham is set to light up the skies as the popular European phenomenon of Light Night comes to the city centre on Saturday 10 October, with a whole evening packed full of free late-night cultural entertainment.

The highlight of the evening will be the spectacular outdoor performance of nutkhut's Bollywood Steps show by Simmy Gupta - an extravaganza of dance, music, light, water and fireworks.  The show will be presented against the architecturally lit backdrop of the city's neo-classical Town Hall, which celebrates its 175th anniversary this year.

A stage in Centenary Square will present live music from 6pm, while a Choral Concert by Candlelight will take place in Birmingham Cathedral, courtesy of Ex Cathedra.  Other entertainment, including light trails, fire juggling and street performances will be on offer throughout the city centre.

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery will also be open late allowing visitors to browse one of the world's largest collections of pre-Raphaelite art, ancient Egyptian artefacts and many other treasures.  The whole evening will conclude with a stunning fireworks display in Centenary Square at 2245.

Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport & Culture said, "Birmingham City Council's Leisure Services are committed to improving the quality of life for all of our residents and visitors, and free events such as Light Night give everyone a chance to experience some of the vast array of cultural opportunities we have in the city."

Light Night is organised by Birmingham City Council with support from Performances Birmingham Ltd, and is based on the concept of ‘Nuit Blanche' in Paris.  The aim of the event is to open cultural and other venues late into the night, to present unusual and unexpected events and to turn the whole city centre into an art gallery in order to celebrate the culture of the city.
