Nottingham Light Night 12 and 13 February 2010

Nottingham is hosting its third Light Night – a mixture of outdoor performances from professional artists, performers and community groups, sound and light installations and indoor cultural activities. (See the programme for full details of the events taking place). The event utilises areas of the city that are culturally renown and welcoming to the public but not usually after dark. These include Nottingham Castle, Old Market Square, the Lace Market quarter and the vibrant bohemia area, Hockley.

Working with international lighting artists, this year Nottingham will bring more of a ‘wow’ factor to its light installations, whilst maintaining quite dark areas of the city to bring a contrast to the events offer. Also the creations of a secret garden for children where they can participate in activities, hear stories, take part or watch what’s happening – and refreshments will be provided too…

The city is looking at how to bring new and diverse audiences into the city. There is a transport offer and selected discounts from restaurants and a mass choir of children as a main feature – launching the event. All this helps to attract a family audience and help embed the message that the city has something to offer a broader sector of the community at night.

This year Chinese New Year is celebrated during the same weekend as well as Valentines and the city expects to have a more diverse cultural experience that will continue through to Sunday – much on its own steam as Valentines will bring a romantic ambiance as couples roam to celebrate this ancient ritual.

There are a host of activities to see so here is a flavour of them to temp you to come to Nottingham, a Pianothon at the Royal Centre, music and choirs in Exchange Arcade, poetry and music in several venues, early and late performances at the Playhouse, ghost tours, tales from the darker side, squash buckling in the Castle, restaurants and bars enticing diners and drinkers with special offers, music, candle light treats and even a treasure hunt and much, much more…

Friday offers many indoor activities that are not repeated on Saturday and the public are asked to plan their visit to make the most of what’s on offer, with much of it FREE.

A Great weekend to visit Nottingham we hope you come – you’ll be most welcome.
